From 14 – 19 October 2024, Ms. Sirilak Cheng and Ms. Boonsita Chunsanit, third-year students from the School of Sinology, were selected as Thai representatives to participate in the Yunnan International Sister Provinces/Cities Youth Exchange Week 2024 in Yunnan Province, China. Four representatives from Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, were selected, two from Mae Fah Luang University and two from Chiang Rai Rajabhat University.
The Yunnan International Sister Provinces/Cities Youth Exchange Week 2024 was organised by the Yunnan Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Yunnan Friendship Foundation for NGO Network for International Exchanges, with the theme “Experiencing a Many-Splendored Life Called Yunnan”. The event brought together over 100 youth from 25 sister provinces/cities of Yunnan Province in 20 countries such as Japan, South Korea, the United States, Russia, France, Romania, the Czech Republic, Australia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Nepal, Mongolia, and Egypt, to join Chinese youth in a variety of rich exchange activities.
During the cultural trip, Thai participants visited Mengzi City and Jianshui City to explore Chinese history, beliefs and lifestyle though traditional dishes, songs, dances, music instruments, architecture, historical sites, and pottery making. In addition, Thai representatives showcased Thai traditional dance in the closing ceremony, wearing traditional Thai attire.
The event served as a platform for participants to enhance mutual understanding, exchange cultures, establish friendships, and promote mutual learning, ultimately contributing to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Ms. Sirilak Cheng shared her feeling, stating, “It is such an honor to be one of the Thai youth representatives attending the Yunnan International Sister Provinces/Cities Exchange Week 2024. This event impressed me in so many ways, but if I had to choose what impressed me the most, it would be how youth from 20 countries easily united and formed friendships within such a short period of time. Regardless of language, gender, culture, or religion, we were able to connect and create unforgettable memories together. It made me realise the beauty of humanity—we are loving and peaceful creatures. This event allowed me to celebrate our shared humanity, embrace friendship, and look forward to a more peaceful world.”
Ms. Boonsita Chunsanit also expressed her enthusiasm, saying “My experience in Yunnan was so incredible that it exceeded all my expectations. Yunnan is truly beautiful and unique, rich in culture, nature, food, and its people. I was impressed by the way of life here, with its remarkable diversity in every aspect. What I love most about this place is the perfect harmony of life, where diverse ethnic groups coexist alongside nature and urban life—a perfect blend. Here, people truly enjoy their beautiful lives. This trip was beyond my expectations, and I definitely want to return. I love you, Yunnan!”
