Mae Fah Luang University has once again showcased the potential of Thai youth in innovation. A student team from MFU recently won first runner-up in the 24th Thailand Innovation Awards 2024 with their innovative project, "Demeter," a smart unmanned aerial vehicle designed for precision agriculture.
The "Demeter or DragonFly", developed by Mr. Simeown Todsawongwat, a third-year Computer Engineering student from the School of Applied Digital Technology, and Ms. Kanyanat Somtong, a third-year Environmental Health student from the School of Health Science, is equipped with artificial intelligence and an automated system that enables 24/7 operation. The drone’s automatic base station further simplifies its use, requiring no special training or licenses. This innovative solution has the potential to revolutionise Thai agriculture by ushering in the era of Precision Agriculture.
The Thailand Innovation Awards 2024 was organized through collaboration between the National Innovation Agency (NIA), the Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King, and Education New Zealand (ENZ). This year, Education New Zealand contributed to the development and promotion of innovation education through international exchange of tools, processes, and experts.
The competition was divided into two categories: undergraduate/high vocational certificate and high school/vocational certificate. The winners were honoured with royal cups from Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra.
To foster innovation and entrepreneurial skills among young people, contestants participated in the "Young Innovator: STEAM4INNOVATOR Camp," where they received training and mentorship. This initiative aims to empower young innovators to extend their work into future innovative businesses and contribute to the nation's economic growth.
The success of the MFU student team highlights the potential of Thai youth to address real-word challenges through innovation. By leveraging technology to improve agricultural practices, these young innovators will be a crucial force in driving Thailand towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
