On 23 November 2024, Mae Fah Luang University held a brainstorming session to review lessons learned from the flash flood incident on 1 October 2024 and develop a comprehensive disaster response plan. Asst. Prof. Dr. Matchima Naradisorn, President of Mae Fah Luang University, presided over the opening ceremony at Kham Mok Luang Room, M-Square Building.
MFU President stated that Chiang Rai province experienced severe flooding in August and September, followed by flash floods in early October that affected the area in front of the university and nearby communities. Recognising the university’s vulnerability to various disasters, including floods, landslides, earthquakes, and PM 2.5 pollution, a comprehensive disaster response plan is essential to prepare for future emergencies.
The meeting brought together executives, staff, and expert speakers from four schools: the School of Management, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Science, and the School of Integrative Medicine. Key speakers included Mr. Nattaphon Rangsaritvorakarn, lecturer at the School of Management, who summarized the water situation and affected areas; Dr. Noppharit Sutthasil, lecturer at the School of Health Science, who addressed post-disaster issues like waste management, mud removal, and assistance requests; and Asst. Prof. Onnalin Singkhorn, lecturer at the School of Nursing, who focused on mental health issues and recovery.
The meeting was divided into four working groups: senior management, middle management, operational staff by division function, and affected students. Each group collaborated to extract lessons learned from pre-disaster, during-disaster, and post-disaster periods to develop warning systems, evacuation procedures, shelter preparation, equipment supplies, provision of food, drinking water, and necessities, and victim assistance strategies.
This disaster response plan will align with the university's Strategy 5, which focuses on resource management optimization and sustainable future value creation as outlined in the 5th Development Plan (2022-2026, 2024 revision). The plan will clearly define the structure and roles of the Mae Fah Luang University Disaster Management Center to effectively handle potential disasters. Mae Fah Luang University prioritizes the safety of its community and the local area, and this plan is a testament to that commitment. By developing a robust disaster response plan, the university aims to mitigate risks, respond effectively to emergencies, and ensure the well-being of all stakeholders.
"This lesson review will serve as a crucial foundation for developing a comprehensive and effective disaster response plan, enabling the university to respond promptly to various emergencies and protect the safety of students, staff, and university assets," concluded MFU President.
