Mae Fah Luang University Hosts French Language Camp for Northern Thai, Celebrating Thai-French Ties

On 31 May – 1 June 2025, the French – Upper Mekong Sub-region Academic Cooperation Centre, Mae Fah Luang University, organised the French Language Camp (Camp de Français), supported by the French Embassy in Bangkok, at Kham Mok Luang Room, M-square Building. The camp’s theme was the 340th anniversary of the first contact between Siam and France in 2025, as well as the 170th anniversary of the establishment of Thai-French diplomatic relations in 2026. The camp aimed to enhance French language proficiency and provide an opportunity for students in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Phayao, and Phrae to learn French from experts and native speakers. It also aimed to deepen relations among French-teaching educational institutions in Northern Thailand.

In the opening ceremony, Asst. Prof. Dr.Romyen Kosaikanont, Vice President, presided over and welcomed the participants. The camp brought together instructors including Ms. Flavie Lepoutre, head of the French – Upper Mekong Sub-region Academic Cooperation Centre; Mr. Aticom Chitkasemsuk and Mr. Luc Nguyen from the School of Liberal Arts, University of Phayao; and Ms. Songsavan Worraarpakorn from the School of Liberal Arts, Mae Fah Luang University.

The camp engaged over 60 students who are studying French from seven schools in Northern Thailand, including Chak Kham Khanathon School, Damrongratsongkroh School, Mae Chan Wittayakhom School, Phayao Phitthayakhom School, Piriyalai School Phrae, Samakkhi Witthayakhom School, and Yupparaj Wittayalai School.

Mae Fah Luang University realises the significance of foreign language learning as a tool to promote cross-cultural understanding and enhance international collaboration, in order to equip youth with skills for keeping pace with the rapidly changing world.
