On 14 August 2025, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) and the NHK Mito Children's Choir, Japan, co-hosted a special concert titled “To Chiang Rai – Through Japanese Choral Theatre and Song on the Stage of Thailand” at C4 Auditorium, Mae Fah Luang University. This event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the NHK Mito Children's Choir and marked the inaugural International Cultural Exchange Program between Japan and Thailand.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from Asst. Prof. Dr. Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan of the School of Liberal Arts, followed by the official concert opening by Prof. Dr. Sujitra Wongkasemjit, Vice President of Mae Fah Luang University.
The performances commenced with the musical “Son of Spirit”, which was inspired by the real-life Tham Luang Cave incident in Chiang Rai, interwoven with the local legend of Khun Nam Nang Non. Through a beautiful blend of music, choral arrangements, and theatrical performance, the production portrayed themes of love, loss, and timeless human connection. This show was followed by contemporary ethnic music, choral works from Pgakenyaw (Karen) youth, performances by the MFU Band, and collaborative pieces involving the NHK Youth Choir, Pgakenyaw youth choir, and the MFU Band.
The NHK Mito Children's Choir presented an inspiring musical performance from a youth perspective, interspersed with traditional and contemporary Japanese songs. Their clear, resonant voices, spanning a range from primary school children to high school students and alumni, conveyed a powerful sense of hope and warmth to the audience. The choir’s singing, acting, and multimedia presentations were praised for their beauty and professionalism, with attendees describing the performance as a full theatrical production.
Joint performances with MFU students further highlighted the true spirit of cultural exchange, as the harmonies of Thai and Japanese youth merged, creating a shared friendship through music that transcended borders.
More than just a showcase for art and music, this concert served as a powerful cultural bridge, strengthening Thai–Japanese friendship and reflecting MFU’s mission to promote international cultural exchange. It also offered the young participants an inspiring experience to grow as global citizens, fostering creativity, compassion, and confidence.
