MFU Advances Toward a Mekong Regional Medical Hub: Education and Healthcare for Friendship Without Borders

On 15 December 2025, Mae Fah Luang University, in collaboration with Mae Fah Luang University Medical Center Hospital, hosted a health promotion activity for Chiang Rai media representatives at the MFU Medical Center Hospital. The event aimed to express appreciation to local media for their continued support in sharing the university's mission and initiatives, while providing health screening services and medical consultations for the attendees.

The event was presided over by Asst. Prof. Dr. Matchima Naradisorn, President of Mae Fah Luang University, and attended by university executives. During her address, the President noted that MFU Medical Center Hospital was established as a hospital for the people of Chiang Rai. Built with an investment of over 4 billion baht from government funding and public donations, the hospital reflects a collective commitment to improving the community’s quality of life and well-being.

“Our primary mission is to serve the people–beginning in Chiang Rai and gradually expanding our services to neighboring provinces and the Mekong Subregion, " she said. “This vision follows the guiding principle of Professor Dr. Vanchai Sirichana, Founding President and Chairman of the University Council, who firmly believed that 'no patient should ever be denied medical care due to poverty.”

The President emphasised that, given Chiang Rai’s strategic location as a gateway to neighbouring countries, MFU views healthcare as more than clinical treatment. The university integrates education and public health as strategic tools to foster friendship, enhance well-being, and promote a sustainable future. By providing educational opportunities and healthcare services to communities across the Mekong Subregion, MFU contributes to mutual understanding and long-term international cooperation.

Currently, MFU delivers healthcare services under the 3Ps framework: Promotion, Prevention, and Prediction. These services are offered through the MFU Wellness Center, dental care center, specialized clinics, and medical services combining modern medicine with Thai and Chinese traditional medicine.

Additionally, the university provides medical and dental services to people in the remote communities through mobile medical units. MFU also continues to strengthen its human resource capacity and elevate healthcare standards through international collaborations with leading institutions such as Oregon Health and Science University (USA) and Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine (People's Republic of China).

Looking ahead, MFU plans to expand its medical services over the next five years (2026-2030). This expansion includes the establishment of a vascular surgery clinic, a neurological rehabilitation center, a diabetes center, and other specialized clinics. The university also aims to establish a Clinical Medical Education Center at Nan Hospital and extends its healthcare network to the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

“With the collective support of the Chiang Rai community, Mae Fah Luang University is committed to becoming a Regional Medical Hub for the Mekong Subregion, providing equitable healthcare for people of all ages,” the President concluded. “This endeavor carries forward the royal aspiration of 'Restore Forests, Cultivate People' and reflects the university’s commitment to serving as a 'Driving Force for Well-Being and Sustainable Future.’
