On 19 - 20 March 2026, the team of academic staff from the School of Medicine, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU), led by Dr.Phichai Phongmanjit, a specialist in surgical oncology (Gl tract) and general surgery (inguinal hernia), conducted a specialised training, demonstration, and surgical programme on inguinal hernia repair under local anaesthesia at Bokeo Provincial Hospital, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). The programme aimed to provide academic services to medical personnel in Lao PDR and strengthen healthcare collaboration within the Greater Mekong Subregion.
The programme was designed to share knowledge and surgical skills in inguinal hernia repair under local anaesthesia with physicians and public health personnel in Lao PDR, enabling them to perform the procedure independently, safely and effectively. The two-day agenda included academic lectures, surgical demonstrations in the operating theatres, and hands-on practice sessions, all facilitated by specialist faculty from MFU's School of Medicine.
This initiative aligns with Mae Fah Luang University's mission to serve as a regional wellness and medical hub for the Greater Mekong Subregion. It marks a significant milestone in expanding academic and service collaboration with neighbouring countries toward the shared goal of improving health and well-being across the region.
