MFU Researcher Wins Emerging Award at RISE+ Awards 2026 with “Thai Bioleather Collection”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Rungarun Sasanayart from the School of Agro-Industry at Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) received the Emerging Award at the RISE+ Awards 2026 for her innovative project, the “Thai Bioleather Collection.” As part of this recognition, she was selected to present her work on the main stage during the RISE+ Storyteller session at IP x Venture RISE Thailand 2026, held on 27 August 2026 at Hall 8, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. The event was jointly organised by the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), Ministry of Commerce, and Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI).

The RISE+ Awards 2026, organised by TSRI, was held under the concept “Every Innovation Has a Story: Transform Thai Research into Something the World Wants to Take Home.” The initiative aimed to promote the transformation of Thai research, technology, and innovation into creative works that tell meaningful stories, create value, and have the potential for real-world application. It also sought to encourage the development of research-based products with tangible potential for prototyping and commercialisation.

Developed in collaboration with Ms. Panida Ponlabute, founder of PO+ Kombucha, the project transforms SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast)—a by-product of the kombucha fermentation process—into a bio-based alternative material known as vegan leather. The material was then developed into a collection of lifestyle products, including passport covers, business card holders, luggage tags, and coin purses.

Incorporating patterns inspired by Thai art and craftsmanship, under the concept “From Fermentation to Sustainable Thai Craftsmanship,” the collection demonstrates how research knowledge can add value to materials left over from production processes while bringing Thai cultural identity into contemporary, environmentally friendly products.

By converting agricultural residue into premium goods, the “Thai Bioleather Collection” brings to life research-based souvenirs that global audiences want to take home. Ultimately, this success underscores MFU’s broader commitment to driving research that actively serves society. By championing the circular economy, MFU researchers are providing scalable solutions to environmental waste, opening new economic avenues for local industries, and proving how academic innovation can unite sustainability with cultural heritage.
