MFU Hosts Cross-Cultural Communication Workshop to Enhance Staff’s Global Competencies

On 2 September 2026, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU), through the Human Resources Division, organised a workshop titled "Cross-Cultural Communication and Internationalisation" at the Wanasawan Meeting Room, Wanasom Resort. 

The workshop aimed to deepen participants' understanding of cross-cultural communication principles and practices, foster an appreciation for diversity, and support effective adaptation to international work settings. 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Romyen Kosaikanont, Vice President, served as the key workshop leader, while Asst. Prof. Dr.Siriyaporn Khuntason, Assistant to the President, delivered the opening remarks to over 40 support and operational staff members.

The workshop centered on interactive group activities delivered in both English and Thai. Participants temporarily stepped away from their personal identities to engage in role-playing scenarios, with many embodying renowned role models. Through these roles, staff members exchanged viewpoints to better understand unfamiliar perspectives and navigate cultural diversity. When forming teams, participants were required to join groups of individuals with different personalities and strengths. This simulated real-world workplace dynamics where differences must be managed constructively, inspiring participants to develop the skills necessary to work effectively with others.

In her opening remarks, Asst. Prof. Dr.Siriyaporn Khuntason highlighted MFU's unique positioning:

“Mae Fah Luang University benefits from a distinct geographic and strategic location. Located in Chiang Rai—a northern gateway connecting Thailand with Lao PDR, Myanmar, and China across the Greater Mekong Subregion—our environment is defined by diverse languages, ethnicities, and ways of life. MFU serves as an international learning hub for students, faculty and staff from both Thailand and around the world. Diversity is therefore an active part of our daily operations and our supporting staff serve as the frontline team responsible for delivering services, coordinating with national and international partners, and representing MFU's professional image.

True internationalisation extends beyond physical infrastructure or multilingual signage; it relies on the core competencies of our people. Knowledge, skills, an open-minded attitude, an understanding of differences, effective communication, and cultural adaptability are essential for smooth collaboration. 

This workshop reflects MFU’s ongoing efforts to equip staff with practical and essential skills, including managing cultural differences, reading non-verbal cues, and communicating confidently to reduce misunderstandings and support MFU's international service standards.
