Chiang Rai Tea Product Wins the Grand Gold Prize in the World Green Tea Contest 2021 with Supportive Works from MFU’s Tea and Coffee Institute

     Mae Fah Luang University would like to congratulate Wang Put Tan Tea Plantation, Doi Mae Salong, Chiang Rai province for winning the Grand Gold Prize for its tea product “Khiri Black Tea” in the World Green Tea Contest 2021, held by the World Green Tea Association on 18 - 19 August in Japan. Out of 79 tea products from tea producing countries around the world such as Japan, China and Korea, the Khiri Black Tea was one of the Grand Gold Prize winners decided from the viewpoints of marketability and quality. 

     The Director of MFU’s Tea and Coffee Institute, Asst. Prof. Dr.Piyaporn Chueamchaitrakun stated that last year Thailand won the Gold Prizes for two tea products in the World Green Tea Contest 2020 which have built confidence in Thai entrepreneurs. Therefore, Thailand had decided to participate in the contest for the second time. Asst. Prof. Dr.Piyaporn Chueamchaitrakun added that before participation, the President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Tea and Coffee Institute tasted teas at Doi Mae Salong and found that the black tea has mellow taste and a unique aroma. With distinctive characteristics of Khiri Black Tea, the Tea and Coffee Institute was very confident for the competition.

      The World Green Tea Contest is a competitive exhibition to propose innovative products that point to the future of green tea. All entries included samples for evaluation and display. Entry categories include loose leaf, tea bag, granule, beverage and others. The categories for evaluation and scoring include packaging (concept and naming, packaging design and cost effective) and Quality of liquor (aroma and taste). The awards are Grand Gold Medal, Gold Medal, Packaged Award and Consolation Prize.
