The Spirit of Nursing: Story of In-flight Medical Emergency

On 18 June 2017, lecturers from the School of Nursing at MFU, Dr. Boonyapat Shatpattananunt and Dr. Phornsawan Chuajedton helped a sick passenger on a commercial flight travelling from Chiang Rai to Hatyai.

Dr. Boonyapat said that about 15 minutes after a plane took off, an old man was having an asthma which caused difficulty in breathing. After assessing the situation, Dr. Boonyapat told the cabin crew that she was an emergency nurse and asked for a first aid and required medical instruments. Dr. Boonyapat checked patient’s blood pressure, gave him medications and oxygen mask. After receiving medical assistance, the condition of passenger did not get better; therefore, Dr. Boonyapat suggested an emergency landing. The captain decided to make emergency landing at the Don Muang airport. When the plane landed, Dr. Phornsawan sent the record of the patient's personal history, medical history, current vital and the manifest symptoms to medical staffs at airport for further medical assistances.

“No matter where we are, we will always be emergency nurses. If the emergency occurs, we are willing to help patients with all our hearts and the spirit of nursing. Also,we would like to thank everyone for all supports.”, said Dr. Boonyapat.
