On 17 December 2023, Mr. Sombun Saeliw, a fourth-year student of the Business Chinese programme, the School of Sinology won the third place in the Yunshan Cup International Remote Interpreting Contest (Thai-Chinese consecutive interpretation) organised by the School of Interpreting & Translation Studies, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China.
Mr. Sombun Saeliw was trained by Ms. Nanwang Yu and Ms. Meyawee Sujthanee, lecturers of the School of Sinology.
Out of over 4,000 participants, there were 216 finalists from Chinese and foreign universities competed in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting on a remote interpreting platform.
Under the theme of “Cultural exchanges and mutual learning, a better future of the world”, competitors narrated China’s stories in 14 foreign languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Malay, Lao, Burmese and Khmer.
The “Yunshan Cup” International Remote Interpreting Contest was initiated by Guangdong University of Foreign Studies aiming to enhance the global understanding of China’s perspectives and solutions and foster cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between China and the outside world.
